The Mesdag Collection

At Laan van Meerdervoort lies the former home of the famous marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831 – 1915). In addition to being a painter, he was also an avid art collector. Mesdag had a museum built for his extraordinary collection, including countless masterpieces from the 19th-century Barbizon School and the Hague School.

The Mesdag Collection comprises the house and the museum, an intimate building with an exclusive atmosphere. In every room, you will feel as if you’ve wandered into the 19th century. The walls are lavishly decorated with nostalgic patterns and large windows abound, offering a view of the elegant garden and the tower of the Peace Palace.
